Ram Kumar(1924 - 2018)
Simla born Ram Kumar is regarded to be the first among all modern artists in India to make way for abstract art, at the expense of figurativism. Kumar was closely associated with the Progressive Artists Group along with the likes of Tyeb Mehta, Raza and Husain. Kumar is regarded to be a Modernist master who primarily painted landscapes in oils and acrylics and presented them with profound sensibility and diffidence, while working on universal themes of sensuality and ascetic attributes intertwined. Kumar’s art holds a record amount for its selling price at auctions and different art events and also forms a part of many a permanent collections all over the world. Ram Kumar received the Padma Shri in 1972 and much later the Padma Bhushan, in 2010.
