Pt. Ravi Shankar was born in Varanasi , grew up studying music and toured as a member of his brother’s dance troupe. After serving as the director of All-India Radio, he began to tour India and the United States. Pt. Ravi Shankar has been the best known proponent of the Sitar internationally and an ambassador of Classical Indian Music to the western world. His associations with pop icons such as Beatle’s George Harrison, and violinist Yehudi Menhuin shaped the international music trends in the 1960’s and onwards.
Little known fact about the maestro is that he painted in his private life. He gave vision to his artistic journey on the canvas, and both became an extension of his music. Shankar painted about music, and the sitar, and the theme plays into each of his canvas.
Pt. Ravi Shankar received many awards. He won five Grammy Awards in his lifetime. He was also honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. For his great contribution to Indian music, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1986.
He was honored by the Govt. of India with Padma Bhushan in 1967, Padma Vibhushan in 1981. He was bestowed with the highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1999.
