Jamini Roy is often looked upon as one of the most prolific and influential artist of India to have contributed heavily towards modern art. He was one of the most famous pupils of “Gurudev” Rabindranath Tagore and took to painting in an impressionistic style before being inspired by Byzantine art.
Gradually, he resorted to employ native base materials to create artworks on mats, wood and clothes. Preferring to call himself a “Patua” Roy had started his artistic journey as a commissioned portrait painter.
In time, he abandoned academic Western training, and lay focus on Bengali folk traditions, in his quest to immortalize simplicity of the folk people and in the process impart wholesome identity to Indian art. He was honoured with the State award of Padma Bhushan in 1954.
