Akbar Padamsee

(Born 1928 – present)

A contemporary Indian artist who is regarded to be one of the pioneers of Indian Modern Art, to the likes of Raza, M.F. Husain or Souza. A diploma in Fine Arts from J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, Padamsee has worked across a variety of forms & mediums like oil and water colours, sculptures, lithography, print making and much more. Chiefly introspective, Padamsee is famous for his “Mirror Images” which are essentially abstract and includes a plethora of subjects like landscapes, heads , nudes often brought  to life in pencil and charcoal works.

He has held several solo exhibitions overseas including in Montreal , Paris , London etc. and has participated in several international Biennales including those at Venice, Sao Paulo and Tokyo. His works have been auctioned by Christie’s and Sotheby’s several times.

He received the J.D.Rockfeller III Fund Fellowship, USA in 1965 and the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship 1969-70 . He was also an artist in residence at the State University of Wisconsin in USA until 1967

He was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship, Kala Ratna by the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Kalidasa Samman from the Madhya Pradesh Government in Plastic Arts and lastly the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honor.
